New Journal 56 – Durham Cathedral

Note: Remember that the 1.7gb digital blending megapack is still available! –

Today we had the wonderful privilege of being shown around the very grand, Durham Cathedral. We explored the darker, rarely seen corridors and viewed the main hall from an amazing spot. Even if I’d left the camera at home it would have been worth the journey.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit and photograph some incredible places of worship around the world. It was a refreshing change to shoot one so beautiful on my own doorstep.

Thanks to John and Liz for arranging it all. I hope to publish an image from there tomorrow.

Today’s Photo – Mount Fitzroy and a pink sunset

This is a composite. The sky was extremely flat in the original shot. The image, for my taste, needed a complete work over. From huge colour corrections and very specific contrast adjustments, to distorting and re-aligning the road lines, and eventually cleaning the image of distracting road signs.

After the whole workflow, the image was still missing something. In the end, I added a Darken/Lighten filter from Color Efex and masked the top half out, leaving just the bottom half (from the road down). This has the effect of highlighting the distant part of the road, while adding a slight vignette to the nearest part of the road. It immediately added depth and gave the eye more direction

Quite a difference in the before and after today! It really goes to show that you can make art from many different starting points and get terrific results.

It looks great but it enters virtual reality territory. It raises philosophical questions whether it’s still a photograph 🙂 But it looks good for sure.
